BIRDING IN CORBETT PARK


Though Corbett is called the ‘land of roar and trumpet’, birding in Corbett Park and its surrounding areas is a great attraction for birdwatchers all around the world. From the wintering Ibisbill on the Kosi River to the several raptor species found in an area, Corbett has a count of more than 500 species.

You can choose from day walks to multi-day birding tours in the different habitats of the area. During these trips you can also stay at our lodges and in forest bungalows inside the park.

Guests are escorted by our expert bird guides and travel by 4WD jeep. All meals are provided. The trip cost includes entry fees into the National Park with all relevant permits.

Day 1 - 2: Delhi-Corbett National Park
Arrive in Wild Tusker Lodge in time for a sumptuous lunch. Explore the environs of the lodge, where you will spend the first two nights.

Spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding forest and streams for species like the Great Hornbill, Chestnut-headed Tesia, Great Slaty Woodpecker, Spotted Forktail, Long-billed Thrush, Slaty-backed Forktail, Siberian Rubythroat, Brown Fish Owl, Tawny Fish Owl, Collared Falconet, Red-billed Leothrix and Scaly-breasted Wren Babbler.

During your stay here you will also drive to the banks of the Kosi River to try and spot the Ibisbill, Wall Creeper and the Great Thick-knee. One afternoon you will visit Bhakrakot village to look for the Fire-tailed Sunbird, Bluethroat, Scarlet Minivet, Black-hooded Oriole, Black-crested Bulbul, Zitting Cisticola, Striated Prinia, Crested Treeswift, Slaty-headed Parakeet, Eurasian Hobby and the Rufous-bellied Eagle.

Day 3 - 4: Riverine Woods
The next two days involve challenging birding in the Mandal Range of Corbett Tiger Reserve. Species to look out for include the Long-tailed Broadbill, Little Forktail, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Maroon Oriole, Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher, Slaty-blue Flycatcher, Lesser Yellownape, Lesser Racket-tailed Drongo, Black-chinned Yuhina, White-crested Laughing thrush, Small Niltava, Rufous-bellied Niltava, Bar-tailed Treecreeper and Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch.

We will explore the riverine eco-system flanked by thick Sal forest.

Day 5: Tiger Camp
Transfer to Tiger Camp after a fruitful morning in the Lohachaur grasslands. Besides the birding walks, we will take an early morning game drive to Bijrani and Jhirna Ranges of Corbett National Park in search of the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger.

Day 6: Dhikala Forest Rest House
Dhikala is the main tourist centre of the Corbett National Park. Hence it has many restrictions and walking is prohibited in this zone except in designated areas. During your one night stay in Dhikala, you will go for game drives to observe the wildlife of the area. You will also go for elephant safaris deep into the forest to look for the tiger. Birding in Dhikala is quite an attraction and species that can be observed here include Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, Cinereous Vulture, Red-headed Vulture, Pallas’s Fish Eagle, Pied Harrier, Black Francolin, Tawny Pipit, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Slaty-headed Parakeet, Emerald Dove and Jungle Bush Quail.

Day 7: Dhikala-Tiger Camp-Delhi
Before returning to Tiger Camp for lunch, we take an early morning drive to look for the grassland specialities Hodgson’s Bushchat, Bright-headed Cisticola and the Bristled Grassbird. On the drive back we stop at Highbank to search for the Indian Mugger and Gharial, the fish-eating crocodile.

Depart for the next destination post-lunch.
